What an expired RC means
Once the registration expires, the car can’t be driven on public roads until it’s renewed. Driving it anyway can get you fined.
Since April 2022, renewing the registration of a car older than 15 years costs ₹5,000. On top of that come the fitness test, any repairs needed to pass it, and extra charges if you renew late.
Can I scrap a car with an expired RC?
Yes. An expired registration doesn’t stop a car from being scrapped. You still need the RC itself, or a declaration if it’s lost, and the owner’s ID. The scrapping facility then cancels the registration on VAHAN.
Renew or scrap?
- Renew if the car is in good shape and you’ll keep driving it for years.
- Scrap if it needs major work to pass the fitness test, or you’re buying a new car anyway.
Scrapping gets you a Certificate of Deposit. In Chandigarh, a scrapped car at least 15 years old gets you 25% off the motor vehicle tax on a new private car. In Punjab it’s up to 25%.
